Scoliosis correction uses screw instrumentation and corrective maneuvers to straighten the abnormal curve and rotation of the spine, restoring alignment and relieving pain.
Scoliosis correction uses pedicle screws, connecting rods, and corrective maneuvers to reduce the abnormal sideways curve and rotation of the spine and fuse it in a corrected position. The goals are to stop the curve from worsening, restore as much normal alignment as possible, relieve pain, and in severe cases improve breathing affected by rib cage deformity.
Modern techniques allow far greater correction than was possible a decade ago. Screws placed at each level give three-dimensional control of the spine, and corrective forces applied through the instrumentation reduce the curve while the spine is held in place as bone graft fuses the segments permanently.
For rigid or severe curves, osteotomies, controlled bone cuts, are added to allow adequate correction. Dr. Enguidanos is fellowship trained in all of these techniques under Dr. Thomas Lowe at the University of Colorado, the former president of the Scoliosis Research Society. Not every curve needs surgery. Physical therapy, bracing in appropriate adolescent cases, pain management, and anti-inflammatory treatment are evaluated before any surgical recommendation.
When a curve is large, progressing, or causing significant pain and functional limits despite conservative care, correction surgery becomes the appropriate path.
The spine is exposed from behind and pedicle screws are placed at each level to be fused, giving three-dimensional control of the deformity. For rigid curves, osteotomies are performed to allow the spine to be mobilized and corrected.
Rods are placed on each side and a series of corrective maneuvers, derotation, compression, and distraction, reduce the curve toward normal while continuous nerve monitoring confirms safety. The correction and front-to-back balance are checked, the rods are locked, and bone graft is applied throughout the construct.
